As winter starts to move towards spring it is time to start conservation work again.
Dumble farm run a big conservation scheme creating habitats for our wonderful local wildlife.

Our first area to tackle is the pond and scrub area. Three trees needed removing from the island, this was to reduce both shade on the pond, plus the large amount of water that the aspen take from the pond in the summer.

Will approached the job armed with his chainsaw!

The first two trees came down without a problem, the third was more of a challenge, leaning in the wrong direction.

Farmer Will, considers the problem! After a lot more sawing, plus lots of knocking in of wedges, the tree fell, the right way thankfully!

We now have a large pile of tree to cut up! Some of it will form log piles, some will be useable timber, the rest will provide brash for replenishing the existing dead hedges and creating more. We now have plenty of habitat creation volunteer work on offer!
Another benefit of removing the trees, is to enable us to make a bridge to the island, this will form a pond dipping platform for educational visits.

We have also added another owl box, targeting tawny owls, this adds to the many bird boxes that we already have round the pond. Thank you to our sponsors for facilitating this 🙂
