On the 27th February, our Highland cow Sidonia, gave birth to our first calf of 2025

As you can tell, baby Sophie is in a shed, we don’t usually calve the Highlands inside, but there is a reason.
Sadly, the reason is that Sophie’s mum Sidonia has been very poorly, she has a nasty skin condition that the vet said is incurable.
A couple of months ago, we made the decision to bring Sidonia away from the main fold and try and treat her; we didn’t want to believe what the vet had told us
.

We gave Sid pain killers, antibiotics and another treatment, that trials have shown can have an effect on her condition. She also had the best food and lots of extra snacks and attention 🙂 It seemed to be working, Sid’s skin condition was much improved, plus she was due to calve.
HAPPY DAY!

The new baby girl was born safe and well, she is beautiful and Sidonia is such a proud mum.
We have decided to call the calf Sophie after a very special person, Sophie Burrill. Sophie was recently diagnosed with stage 4b ovarian cancer that is unfortunately incurable. Sophie is only 28 years old, is recently married and has a young child.
Sophie also loves Highland cows!
Sophie is trying to spread awareness of this disease and the symptoms, in the hope that it can be recognised earlier, and lives can be saved. You can read more about Sophie and her campaign here (16) Facebook
We were contacted by Sophie’s sister, who told us about Sophie’s story and her aims to help others, we thought that as Sid has also been diagnosed with an incurable illness, it seemed right to name her new calf after this very brave lady.

Little Sophie is doing really well and is sure to be a star attraction here at Dumble Farm, who couldn’t love such a cute little face 🙂
