Highland Cow Safari – Highland, History and Habitats

Our Hands on ‘Highlands, History and Habitats’ tour is an adults only tour (over 16’s only) which includes everything on our Highland safari, plus much more.

Safaris start at the farm, where guests first get to meet, stroke and brush our fussy, fluffy year old Highland calves, scratching their chins and brushing their dossen(fringe).

Board the Dumble bus and ride into the grassy meadows to get up close to the majestic Highland Cows and their adorable fluffy calves, there will be plenty of time to photograph these magnificent cattle with their dramatic horns, long flowing coats and cute dossens (fringes) tumbling over their faces.

The knowledgeable Dumble Farm farmers will tell you facts about the breed, you can learn their names and all about their different personalities.

You will learn about the history of Dumble Farm, how the village of Arram was home to people in the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman period.

Travel through an area known as Arram Carrs, once a deep marshy bog steeped in superstition.

Listen to the story of the farm itself, how the family had to rethink the way they were farming and make big changes and diversify because of climate change and the pressures on agriculture.

Visit the scenic ponds, woodland and flower meadows. Here we will stop and learn about our new developing habitat areas. Alongside new trees, hedges and nesting boxes, we are providing other homes for many of our much-loved native wildlife species, which we’ll talk about throughout the tour.

In the wet grassland area we will meet our main Highland fold and see how they are helping create habitats for ground nesting wading birds.

We will visit our affectionate ‘Cuddle cows’ and explain how their life has changed from being dairy cows to professional cuddlers. There will be plenty of time to feed and take photos of all the cows, learning their names and personalities and we will answer all your questions.

We finish off with tea/coffee and Farmer Fi’s  home baked cakes, made with many ingredients grown here on the farm. There is plenty of time while you have a brew, to have a friendly chat with the Dumble Farm farmers, who will be happy to answer any of your questions about the cows, conservation or their farming lives here in East Yorkshire.

The tour will last approximately 2.5-3 hours
